PROJECT 06
TOLLKEEPER'S BIKE STOP
SIZE: 800. SQ. FT.

As part of a studio project focusing on green building, the aim was to create a public facility that responded to the environment, did not disturb the existing site, minimized fossil fuel consumption and maximized natural energy use.

Tollkeeper's Bike Repair & Rest Shop was located in Tollkeeper's Park (750 Davenport Road, Toronto) where an existing heritage bungalow stood. A new 800 sq. ft. wood frame building was proposed, one that relied on passive design principles and resource reuse to achieve net zero. Special consideration to building orientation, natural daylighting, thermal mass, rainwater collection and solar energy was given. The double volume "glass box" at the building's southern front served a dual purpose: 1) to facilitate the "stack effect" for cooling and ventilation, counteracting excess heat and glare and 2) being street facing, the transparent space frames bike repair activities, effectively advertising the building's purpose--supporting green transportation--and generating passerby's interest.
