PROJECT 02

MOMENT CLOTHING

SIZE: 5295 SQ. FT.

Moment clothing is a contemporary women's wear retail store located along the vibrant Ossington St. in Toronto, ON. It is largely finished in concrete panels—a dark, rough material that is more absorptive than reflective. Dynamic slices of black and white stiped wallpaper provide optical play and movement within space. The store is designed to feature the merchandise as art; it is intentionally open and non-cluttered.

The concept of store as gallery means that the definition of space is important: structural lighting—such as cove, linear recessed LED fixtures—is added to emphasize the expanse of planes as well as ceiling heights. To define key casework and create focal points, recessed shelf lighting is installed in display units and at the base of the checkout counter.

Where more meticulous, detail-oriented work takes place, task lighting is provided. Namely, the pendant light at the checkout counter and one above the staff’s breakroom table. In change rooms, in addition to the ambient light overhead, linear wall sconces are provided. This illuminates customer’s vertical planes to best flatter them, avoiding horizontal shadowing effects from above.  When it comes to the storage area, illumination in what might be a dark cavernous space was critical.  High CRI and a brighter white (4500K) was used to aid employees in reading SKU and other labels.

For accent lighting, spotlights with narrow beams are used to highlight merchandise; pendant fixtures with dynamic shapes add visual interest and a sense of movement to the otherwise static space; a custom neon sign acts as both wall art and wayfinding element, signaling customers the shoe display is downstairs.

The northern storefront window provides some even natural lighting in the day, but its intensity and reach is limited.

OBJECTIVE:

  • Create a lighting design for a retail project. Given a brief where project size and required room's list were specified, a retail concept and lighting scheme had to be developed

  • Rendered floor plans, elevations and perspectives as well as lighting  plans and lighting detail drawings were required.

  • Application of lighting strategies and concepts was the primary focus.

PROGRAMS USED:
